Blog Post: To Backup or Not To Backup...That Is The Question

For many users, Timeslips is an integral part of their business and therefore it is vital to protect yourself from the possibility of data loss from hardware or software failure, natural disasters, or even good old-fashioned user error. Making frequent backups is the most cost effective way of protecting your business from life’s unforeseen setbacks and Timeslips makes it easy to do in just a few simple steps.   Here are some common reasons we hear for not making frequent backups: I'm too busy to back up my database. I can't get everyone out of the database. I don't know how to make a backup. I'm the only one that uses Timeslips I don't need to make a backup.   Backing up your Timeslips database is very easy to do: Have everyone exit Timeslips ( File; Exit ) Have one user log into Timeslips select File; Backup . (The option to include subfolder found in your database folder should automatically be selected). Choose " Yes " to make a backup Next, there is the option to name the backup file ( eg.Timeslips Backup 4-1-14.bku ) and place the backup where you have easy access to it. Backups can be placed on a local computer drive, a flash drive or server. You can save all of your backups to the same location every time you make a backup but remember to change the name of the backups so that you will not overwrite and existing backup. Select the " SAVE " option   There is also an option to have automatic backups made in Timeslips File; Scheduled Backups… Scheduled backups – which lists the database backups that are currently scheduled. This list includes the following columns: File Name – Indicates the name that will be given to the backup file. If Timeslips is automatically naming the backup, Timeslips Backup yyyy-mm-dd will appear. When creating the backup, Timeslips will use today’s date in place of yyyy-mm-dd . Schedule – Indicates the schedule of the backup and how often the scheduled backup will be created. Next Attempt – Indicates the date that the next backup will occur. Last Attempt – Indicates the date that the last backup occurred. Result – Indicates the result of the last attempted backup   Things can often happen that are out of our control so why not be safe and have backups of your data.
