Forum Post: Timeslips 2017 6 user upgrade from 2014 - some suggestions for a smooth conversion

I am writing this post in the hope that it will be of help others performing Timeslips upgrades on Windows server environments. I ran into data conversion issues (could not load stringtable resource ID:21999), placed a tech support call from the client site and did not get a call back till the next day. Fortunately I had left a copy of their original Timeslips install folder on the server, but here is my 5 cents worth on how I shall proceed with my next server upgrade. 1) Ideally take a laptop on site with Timeslips 2017 SR1 installed (in case the data conversion on the server fails). On the existing version of Timeslips clear all licenses using Station Administrator. Having run DV on the client data put a copy of the client data onto the laptop and set it converting to 2017 SR1 format while you work. 2) Make a complete copy of the existing Timeslips installation folder to the same server - so that if you are stuck with a failed conversion you can point all the client workstation install paths to the copy (using the workstation copies of station administrator) and they can continue to work in their previous version until conversion issues are resolved. (Timeslips 2017 upgrade has to be installed over the existing version.) 3) Install BDE to the server. The conversion will fail at the outset if BDE is not on the server. Make sure to open TCP port 3050 in the Windows Firewall - Sage provide instructions 4) Follow the install guidelines as published and make a note of folders where Timeslips 2017 will place files on the server, After successful installation of Timeslips 2017 to the server open the previous Data folder for conversion. If it converts - great - you can proceed with local installation on workstations. IF IT FAILS . . . . which happens . . . 1) On your laptop, assuming the client data converted successfully, make a backup of the 2017 data (data.TBU) 2) Copy the TBU backup file to the server. 3) Open Timeslips 2017 on the server and select Restore a Backiup. 4) Select Restore a local backup and browse to the TBU file to restore. 5) When prompted select to make the data available to the entire network. Then - even though it may appear to hang and take a while - it should restore your converted data and be available on the server for the workstations.. Perform the local workstation installations and open the data file on the server. On each workstation I received an Address Violation error on first open and had to close Timeslips. I immediately opened it again and it opened fine on all 6 workstations subsequently. I hope that others will find this useful . . . and save some time waiting on hold for tech support - they are deluged right now. Jane Giles Santa Barbara, California 805 680 3304

I've downloaded the SageTimeslips2017.exe file and placed it on the server. However, when I attempt to run the file nothing happens. If I simple double click on it I get nothing. I've even done it with taskmanager open and I don't see any new processes. I've also tried to run it as administrator, but again nothing seems to happen. I've tried just running the phone on a workstation and it appears to run just fine. But I've read Timeslips 2017 need to be installed on the server directly and not a workstation. I can't quite figure out what I'm missing. Thank you for any guidance.

Forum Post: Finalizing bills and purging

Using TSL 17, I did my first billing on Saturday. I approved all of the bills, yet the slip status for all slips indicates billable. Therefore, I can't purge the slips. When I printed the bills, I reviewed and approved all of them. Yet, they're still showing up as billable. Any ideas?

Why are you trying to purge the slips? Generally you run bills and the slips are marked approved and you leave them in the database. Especially with the new platform there's no need to purge slips. Are the AR balances correct? When you look at the slips in the slip list do they have a yellow or red envelope next to them?

Thanks for your response. Yes, balances are correct. There is a yellow envelope next to each slip and each slip says "billed." However, the status says "billable." Is all of this correct? Thanks in advance, Mark

Billed and Billable are different. When you create a slip it is Billable, No Charge or Do Not Bill. It retains this status permanently. Billed means it was included on a bill. The yellow envelope and the Billed status mean it was billed. Sounds like everything is correct. Again you don't need to purge the slips. Since they are billed, they will not show up on another bill. If you purge them you lose the ability to create slip based reports.

What a thorough answer! Thanks again. Sounds like everything is working OK. BTW, I was a certified consultant many years ago when I first purchased Version 8! Always a challenge to get new clients. But, I really appreciate your help. Thanks, Mark

During the Restore process, there should be an option to "Choose a new location" for the restored database. If you do that, just be sure to switch back to your "real" database, using the File > Open Database command.

It is not tested or supported as QuickBooks 2010 is not supported. It might work. You should probably upgrade QuickBooks just on principle given the age.

Trust payment date greater than the slip bill through date

When the Generate Bills Option is set to have A/R dates obey the slip date range, trust payments entered with a date greater than the ending slip date are included in the previous trust balance. If you unmark this option, the previous balance is the same as it was on the last approved bill. I resolved by unmarking the option and allowing all payments to appear on the bill but this didn't seem right to me.

Integration with iTimekeep

It would be great if Timeslips could integrate with Bellefield's iTimekeep for time tracking. This type of integration is available for other major billing systems but not for Timeslips.

Forum Post: Changing Nickname

I have been asked to change the Nickname of a client to something totally different (for example, everything under Smith-Martin would now be Doe-Carter but it is the same client/file). This file has been open in Timeslips for four months and one invoice has been generated. If I change the Nickname, will this also change past slip entries, the invoice generated & payments made from the old Nickname to the new Nickname? Also, if I need to make a report with the new Nickname in the future, will it include time and expenses that were listed under the old Nickname? This is also a LEDES file, if that would be affected. Thanks so much

Forum Post: Timeslips Backup errors

I have a client with Timeslips 2015 installed over a year ago. Everything has been fine but starting this summer issues with the backup started happening. The original location for manual backups would generate an error message saying access is denied. I made sure the permissions was set but still no luck. I created a brand new folder on the server and it was able to backup to that fine. But a concern I have is the automated backups is not working. When I try to go into the autobackup section, it gives me an error message. I have full administrator rights on the computer and in the Timeslips software. Below is a screenshot of the error. Any help would be much appreciated.

The problem was resolved and any new download of 2017 will have the fix in it. There was a BDE configuration setting that was incorrectly specified during the installation process. The installer script was corrected, so this issue should not recur moving forward.
