Forum Post: RE: What is the meaning of "When no rules apply default to Timekeeper, Client or Task" (Timeslips 2012)

This is setting up your "default rate rule" for the client. The rate setting that a particular client typically uses. Some firms have complex rate structures. Timeslips lets you set up to 20 rates for each timekeeper, up to 20 rates for each task, and up to 20 rates for each client. -- Some have very simple billing setups. You may have one rate set up for each timekeeper. Either way, for each client you can set up which rate to use, based on the names selected on the slip. For example, for client ABC you can set up a rule: when timekeeper Jan uses task Review, then use Task rate level 3. And when timekeeper Joe uses task Meeting, then use Timekeeper rate 1. And you also have the "when no rules apply" setting that determines which rate and level to use when none of the rules in the list match your slip. It typically defaults to Timekeeper rate level 1. The nice thing about it is that your rate rule list could be very complex or it could be completely empty; the "when no rules apply" is used when the name combination on the slip doesn't match. All this rate setup rules are optional. It's just a time-saving setting for what rate is initially set when you create a new slip; and you can change that rate source (timekeeper, task, client) and rate level (1 - 20) and rate amount on the slip at any time before billing. In Timeslips, press F1, switch to the Index page, and look up "rates (billing)" for an overview of rates. How you use them depends on how your firm bills, so it may time some time to figure out how you want to set them up. Good Luck!
